Maintenance Planner / Scheduler



General Summary

The Maintenance Planner/Scheduler improves workforce productivity and work quality by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through planning and coordination of labor, parts and material, and equipment access. This position is responsible for the effective execution of all maintenance work control process areas as assigned by Maintenance Manager by managing the efficient and effective use of planning and scheduling all resources to conduct maintenance activities. The Planner/Scheduler is responsible for managing work priority, developing job plans, defining parts and materials, defining skills and engaging the proper resources to develop a safe, effective and efficient work control plan. In addition, the Planner/Scheduler provides the equipment-related expertise and technical guidance on improving Preventive Maintenance activities. The Planner/Schedule also acts as back up to the Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) Coordinator.


Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Acts as principle contact and liaison between the maintenance department and operations. Ensures maintenance service is delivered in a timely manner to ensure high equipment availability and performance.
  2. Reviews work requests from assigned areas, determines validity and accuracy of information and engages the appropriate resources to set a preliminary priority.
  3. Reviews work requests and gains clarity as needed to determine: clear scope of work, realistic completion date, proper lead times, correct equipment identification and proper authorization.
  4. Manages the status of work control and backlogs for work order submission to work order completion.
  5. Verifies all material, information, tools and labor are available prior to scheduling.
  6. Manages a backlog of work orders which require a major or significant portion of the facility to be shutdown.
  7. Works with MRO Coordinator to manage spare part usage to maximize turns while minimizing risk of using critical spares.
  8. Defines skills required for scope of work, and identifies maintenance resources to assign to tasks working with Maintenance Supervisor. The Planner will also be responsible for task assignments during Maintenance Supervisor absences.
  9. Works with Maintenance Supervisor, Leads, Supervisors and Planners to determine resource availability and assign work accordingly.  


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Understanding of maintenance processes and proper use of the work order system, planning/scheduling and storeroom processes.
  2. Ability to manage multiple priorities or projects simultaneously and keep them progressing to completion.
  3. Ability to manage a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) database to ensure accurate information, including parts data, equipment data, and parts inventory.
  4. Ability to read, write and speak in English to communicate accurate instructions verbally and written.
  5. Possess craft knowledge and skill to accurately estimate labor hours, material requirement and skills needed to complete a job. Must have a demonstrated ability to visualize and communicate the execution of work.
  6. Mechanical/electrical background is necessary. Apprenticeship program or technical school background is desirable.
  7. Background with CMMS systems is preferred.
  8. Experience working in a food or processing industry is preferred.
